My Essay

This essay is about self portraits. Why do artists make self portraits? There were a lot of painters in history who made beautiful portraits. Painters such as: Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Judith Leyster and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Before they started painting self portraits, they first asked their selves a very basic but difficult question: Who am I? Not everybody can answer that easily. Because you are a person on the outside but it’s about the person who is deep inside you. If somebody answers this question to quickly they normally do not tell the total truth. They then only look at how other people see them and not at how they see themselves. Some people have the idea that as they look into the mirror they directly know who is standing there and who that person is, but that is not true. When you look into the mirror you know how you look on the outside but not how you are on the inside. What you do and how you behave in different kind of situations.
There are different reasons why people make self portraits. One of them is that the person that you paint is always there and so you can always continue at your own speed. Another reason is that it is a really good way to practice painting expressions, and customers can compare the work of the artist with the actual person, and when you die you leave an image behind. So it is also a way of becoming immortal.
Sometimes painters of self portraits make themselves look better than they actually are. They give themselves serious expressions, or they let themselves look older, younger or more handsome. Painters also use different colours to give patterns on their paintings, and for example when they use darker colours they directly look more angry. They also use different kinds of brushworks. This is clearly shown on some nice paintings of Vincent van Gogh. He uses sometimes dots, little stripes, big brush strokes or even huge spots and that on all different kind of paintings.
Another well know thing in paintings and self portraits are symbols. Painters use religious but also daily symbols. Mostly even experts do not exactly know where those symbols stand for in the painting. A very nice example of this is a self portrait of Paul Gauguin. He painted himself on a orange background with a lot of different symbols. F.E. the apple from Adam and Eve, and the snake which represents the devil or knowledge. The orange background also has a meaning of fire.
Not only colours, symbols and brushworks, But also the use of shadows plays a big role in the paintings of artists. If they would not use shadows a face of a portrait would look flat. But they also use it to hide their selves behind the dark shades. When you then take away the shades you see a really nice picture.
Painters who made self portraits did not earn too much money. So when a costumer asks for a different kind of painting they changed it. This is what Judith Leyster did. She made a nice self portrait, but changed it in somebody painting a musician. This clearly shows how artists change their work to the wishes of their clients.
Nowadays most portraits are not made by hand anymore but on the computer. Although they use a totally different way of expressing their selves. Their art works still look great.

Tree

This time our job for art was to make art that shows movement or feelings. I made a tree. It sounds strange but a tree symbolises life. The green hand on top shows that you can do everything. The tunnel has a star at the end of it. This shows that there is always hope. The river flows and shows that you sometimes need help as well. I think I did a good job only I couldn't finish the painting because I didn't had enough time. I still got a 6,3 for the painting.

A changed picture.

Hello everybody. This time we had a totally different assigment for art. What was it? We had to take a picture of ourselves on the computer and we had to use programmes like GIMP to change the picture so it would show who we are. I chose the picture of me riding my favourite horse. I liked the picuture and I like the result. I pickselated the background and the light seems to come out of my horse's eye. I will just show you the picture were I started with and the result.

I am poem.

For art we had to make an I’m poem. The poem had to be about Judith Leyster. Judith Leyster was an woman artist but because woman in those times were mostly for housekeeping her art wasn’t appreciated. She mostly painted portraits but she also drew other things. There is one painting of her that she changed from a portrait in something else. Why did she do that? Because she hoped people would buy her paintings. We had to use the ELO for the information that we had to fill in the poem. Mine is decorated with flowers because most woman have got something with flowers. I made my whole painting with ecoline. It was pretty hard to draw everything and it had to look nice. I’m proud of it.

Collage

This time we had to make a collage for art. It had to show who we are without our name in it. It was very funny but we also had a lot of problems. Because if you didn't bring any pictures you couldn't make your collage. The first lesson most people could easily start but the second lesson the glue was stolen. So that lesson I couldn't do anything. Now I won't let you wait for my collage any longer here it is.
Sorry that it's upside down but i fotographed it wrong.

A letter to a friend in Van Gogh style

18-11-2011

Hi Michelle,

I had such a nice assignment in the
art lessen. We had to make a self portrait but than in the Van Gogh style. It
was quite hard to make something that actually looked like yourself with only a
few colours but it worked out very well.

I made one drawing in my favourite
colours. The background was black with red, while I made my clothes green and
brownish so it looked really dark. I liked the picture and I wanted to express
myself because I’m always a bit darker. You will always see me being down and
not really seeing me wearing to bright colours. The face I made by mixing
different colours to make skin colour. When I tried to make a nose it didn’t
work out so well so I made it with a small black line. Although that is
actually drawing. My eyes looked rather strange because I had drawn them. One
looks like a dirt spot while the other one looks like a whale. My eyebrows are
also rather strange and they are not really nice. It looks like I’m cross eyed.
My hair looks quite good because my own hair is dark on top but light down.
Although I’m going to paint it purple.

The other picture shows me when I am
in a really interesting mood. I don’t know why I did it like that but I like
the colours green and yellow and it had to be the opposite of my other colours.
You can see that my eyes on that one look totally different than my eyes on the
other one but that is because it was my first painting I finished I used the
bright colours and the eyes had to look bright to. They surely do. I used
different brush strokes but not on the shirt because if you mix those colours
it gets puke green. My mouth looks a bit strange but that is because I used the
black in it, while it actually had to be a darker tint of pink. In this one you
can better see the different strokes and I did it all with one brush so the
colours are mixed and it doesn’t look like one big brown or green-yellow space.

More I don’t need to tell about my
paintings but I like my one with red and black more. I hope you send me your
opinion to.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Self Portrait

For art we had to make a self portrait. On the left one you can see me when I’m just happy. You can see that because of the light colours that I used and the smile on my face. On the right drawing you can see me in my normal mood. I just my favourite colours red and black and also some other dark colours because I like that. I think that my right drawing is the best although my eyes look a bit strange.
